October Jewel of the Month
Hancocks London’s October Jewel of the Month is a remarkable Archaeological Revival necklace by renowned Greek jeweller Ilias Lalaounis.
The 18ct gold necklace, dated circa 1965, is part of Lalaounis‘ celebrated Classical and Hellenistic collection which pays homage to the splendour of ancient Greece. It features a hand-woven chain strung with ornate round discs, each decorated with floral gold wirework. Alternating bull’s head and acorn charms are suspended from the discs, both symbolic motifs from ancient times, evoking strength, endurance, and the natural world. Measuring 16 inches in length, the necklace sits perfectly on the collarbone.
The same model, previously in Hancocks London collection, was owned by Shirley Temple Black, who was not only a beloved Hollywood star but also a respected diplomat and collector of fine jewellery.
Amy Burton, Creative Director, Hancocks London, says: “Lalaounis was a master of reviving ancient techniques and drew inspiration from the classical period of Greek art and culture.”
“This necklace is a perfect example of his Archaeological Revival style. It’s a jewel that transcends time and style, combining ancient inspiration, intricate craftsmanship, and a touch of Hollywood glamour.”
