May Jewel of the Month
Hancocks London is delighted to share this beautifully supple vintage gold and diamond bracelet by the iconic Parisian jewellers Van Cleef & Arpels as its Jewel of the Month for May.
The row of open links are semi-circular in shape and formed of 18ct yellow gold with a lovely soft brushed finish. Each of these is cosseting a single round brilliant cut diamond in a rub over setting within its curve. The thirty-one diamonds are estimated to weigh approximately 3cts in total. Guy Burton, Director, Hancocks London, comments: “The bracelet, which dates from 1955, has a lovely weight to it, is wonderfully articulated and will feel beautiful to wear. The brushed finish to the gold gives it a satiny sheen and the sparkle of the diamonds contrasts nicely against that. It looks great on its own but would also layer well with other bracelets and/or bangles, it’s an easy to wear vintage jewel with a surprisingly contemporary feel.”
In 1954, just a year before this bracelet was made, Van Cleef & Arpels launched a brand new concept, La Boutique, at 22 Place Vendome. It was aimed at a younger clientele and sold jewels and accessories at a more accessible price point. The boutique sold jewels predominantly designed for day wear and alongside their now iconic range of whimsical animal brooches there were bracelets, necklaces, earrings and brooches typically in yellow gold and set with a wide range of gemstones.
It proved incredibly popular and this bracelet would likely have been amongst the earliest pieces sold. Guy Burton adds: “1950s’ jewellery is enjoying a real renaissance at the moment with renewed appreciation for the stylish designs and easy wearability of many of the pieces. There are lots of bold shapes, interesting textured finishes to the metals and a diverse use of gemstones in faceted, cabochon and carved shapes. This really appeals to people looking for something a little different that makes a statement whilst at the same time offering versatility and ease of wear.”
