July Jewel of the Month

Hancocks London proudly unveils its latest Jewel of the Month which features a spectacular 3.10ct Type IIa antique moval diamond.

This D colour, VS1 clarity, old cut diamond is set in an intricate fully handcrafted platinum mount, designed, and created by Hancocks as part of their ‘Disorient’ collection. It encapsulates the perfect fusion of old cut beauty, detailed design and exceptional craftsmanship.

Type IIa diamonds are devoid of any measurable nitrogen, making them exceptionally rare. These diamonds, which constitute less than two per cent of all gem-quality diamonds worldwide, are celebrated for their perfect colourlessness and exceptional level of transparency, magnifying their inherent brilliance and fire. They have adorned some of the most illustrious jewels in history. The Koh-i-Noor and Cullinan diamonds, integral to the Crown Jewels, and the famed Elizabeth Taylor Diamond (originally the Krupp diamond) are all Type IIa diamonds, underscoring their significance and allure.

Guy Burton, Managing Director, Hancocks London, says: “This diamond has it all: a Type IIa certification, significant carat weight, D colour, and VS1 clarity. On top of this is its moval shape, blending the elongated elegance of the marquise cut and the softly rounded ends of an oval, which was a favourite in the early 20th century. This unique cut is now enjoying a resurgence and is deserving of its renewed appreciation.” The diamond is accompanied by not one but two GIA certificates – with the second certifying its exceptional and extremely rare Type IIa classification.

Amy Burton, Creative Director, Hancocks London, says: “Characterised by strong architectural lines that play with ideas of volume, geometry and negative space, the Disorient collection consists of bold sculptural jewels that are substantial but also light, open and feminine. The asymmetric framework of platinum is meticulously handcrafted, requiring hours of precise work to ensure that every line and angle achieves perfect balance.”
