Jewel of The Month - September 2026

A vintage pair of diamond convertible ‘day-to-night’ chandelier earrings in platinum, by Harry Winston, circa 1950s, has been chosen as September’s Jewel of the Month.

The earrings are set with approximately 28cts of diamonds, to the top a cluster of marquise-cut diamonds and a scrolling loop of baguette-cut diamonds, with articulated cascading drops of baguette-cut diamond rows and finished with a graduated cluster of marquise-cut diamonds.

The earrings are convertible: the lower drops detach, so the upper clusters can be worn alone on the ear, while the full chandeliers come into their own for the most glamorous of occasions.

By the 1950s, Harry Winston was one of the most famous jewellers in the world, the “King of Diamonds”. His name became a byword for Hollywood glamour, sung by Marilyn Monroe and worn by the likes of Elizabeth Taylor. Winston’s guiding principle was that the stone should always lead and the metal merely support it, a philosophy these earrings show off to full effect, the platinum all but disappearing beneath the diamonds it carries.

Amy Burton, Creative Director, Hancocks London, says: “A pair of vintage Harry Winston earrings would be a find on their own, they are intrinsically beautiful and important. But the provenance they carry, embodying that refined Hollywood glamour of the period, makes them even more exciting. They belonged to the second wife of Cedric Gibbons, the man who designed the Academy Award statuette itself. An eleven-time winner of the very award he created, with an eye trained on design at the highest level, he would have known exactly what he was looking at in a pair of Winston earrings this exceptional.”
