Jewel of The Month - February 2025

A necklace that combines Japanese history, artistry, and beauty has been selected as Hancocks London’s February Jewel of the Month

The extraordinary antique Japanese Ojime bead necklace, dated circa 1890, is made up of 24 meticulously crafted ojime beads, and perfectly captures the essence of Japanese craftsmanship that flourished during the Edo period (1603–1868).

Each bead in this necklace tells its own story, intricately carved and detailed, perfectly exemplifying the refined elegance and precision synonymous with this period.

The term “ojime” translates to “cord fastener” and originally referred to the beads’ function: securing the silk cords of inrō - small, lacquered containers used by Japanese men to carry personal items such as medicine or seals. These were suspended from a netsuke and became increasingly decorative and highly prized as individual artworks of extraordinary beauty and symbolism.

Amy Burton, Creative Director, Hancocks London, says: "“This necklace is a breathtaking example of Japanese craftsmanship. The intricate detailing of each of the 24 ojime beads, combined with the richness of the 18ct yellow gold setting, truly sets this piece apart. It’s not only jewellery—it’s a wearable work of art, steeped in history and imbued with the tradition and skill of Japan’s master craftsmen."

Ojime beads were traditionally carved from a variety of materials, including wood, ivory, and semi-precious stones. In addition to their functional purpose, the beads often featured symbolic or luck-bringing designs, such as dragons, chrysanthemums, or mythological scenes. These motifs reflected the owner’s personality, aspirations, or status, making each bead as unique as the person who wore it.
