‘Boxing Hares’ Sterling Silver Sculpture (Limited Edition)

A 'Boxing Hares' sterling silver sculpture No. 12 of 20 by Lucy Kinsella, the limited edition pair of long eared brown hares caught mid boxing match, with one stood tall on stretched hind legs raining blows down on the other who crouches lower with front paws raised in defence and with head and ears pulled back. These ‘mad march hares’ as they became known are frequently regarded as the first sign of spring and whilst it was long assumed that they were two males competing for dominance it is in fact more usually a female fighting off the unwanted amorous advances of a male and therefore forms part of the hares’ courtship rituals. They are sculpted in Kinsella’s instantly recognisable style with her dynamic, impressionistic treatment of surface texture and would make a striking addition to any mantle piece, table or sideboard.
