Director’s Notes

Whilst we’re all familiar with the blue variety of sapphires, some might not know that this family of gems comes in a rainbow of different colours and each colour has a range of different hues within its own spectrum. These are known as fancy colour sapphires. The term ‘teal’ to describe this colour originates from the Eurasian duck (Teal) which has a distinctive blueish green stripe around its eye. Every teal sapphire is individual and has its own unique colour. They can range from a yellowy-green, lovely deep blue-green and some even have an icy blue tint. Sapphires belong to the corundum family which is a particularly durable mineral making teal sapphires a great gemstone to have in jewels that will be worn frequently.
