Director’s Notes
Old mine brilliants, often referred to as old miners, are square or rectangular cushion-shaped diamonds distinguished by their rounded corners and gently curved sides. The style developed following the discovery of diamonds in Brazil around 1725, which significantly increased the availability of rough stones and encouraged experimentation in cutting. While cutters continued to follow the natural shape of the crystal in order to retain as much weight as possible, the corners became more rounded and the number of facets increased. The discovery of diamond deposits in South Africa in the late 1860s coincided with advances in mechanical cutting methods, and as newly fashionable round brilliant cuts gained popularity, these earlier cushion-shaped stones became known as 'old mine' diamonds. Today, the term old mine brilliant describes a cushion-shaped diamond with a small table, high crown and polished culet. These proportions allow old mine cuts to display exceptional fire and brilliance, even in low lighting.
