September Jewel of the Month

September Jewel of the Month

For September’s Jewel of the Month, Hancocks London has chosen an 18ct antique French yellow gold and gem-set snake bracelet.

Dated circa 1880, the bracelet is designed to wrap fluidly around the wrist, with its flexible woven 18ct yellow gold structure embodying the elegance and grace of the snake motif.

The snake’s head, finely engraved with intricate detailing, features a line of cushion-cut sapphires set along the top, flanked by old-cut diamonds. Its eyes sparkle with sapphires,
while the tail tapers smoothly to a gold termination.

Amy Burton, Creative Director, Hancocks London, says: “The attention to detail in this antique bracelet is a testament to the fine craftsmanship of the period, the intricate engraving and woven goldwork is not only beautiful but also in exceptional condition, and the use of the sapphires and old-cut diamonds make this piece an exceptional example of its genre.

The snake has been a powerful symbol in jewellery for centuries, revered by different cultures for its diverse meanings. In Ancient Egypt, it signified royalty and divinity, while the Greeks associated it with healing and medicine—a connection that persists today in the medical symbol of the caduceus. The snake’s popularity surged again during the Victorian era after Prince Albert gifted Queen Victoria a snake ring to symbolise their engagement. Since then, the snake motif has remained a staple in jewellery, continuously reimagined in innovative ways throughout the 20th century and beyond.
