March Jewel of the Month
Antique Pavé Diamond Heart Shape Locket Pendant
As we spring into March, Hancocks London has chosen a rare jewel that fuses love and luck together with exceptional Victorian craftsmanship as its jewel of the month.
Dated circa 1896, the antique heart shape locket pendant is the epitome of elegance and features approximately 10cts of diamonds. The intricately designed domed heart is pavé set to the front with old mine cut diamonds and a single pear shape diamond in the centre.
Crafted with precision, the diamonds on the front of the heart are set in a pierced out silver setting backed with gold while its rounded back is polished 18ct gold.
The pendant is suspended from a diamond-set navette shaped bale and hung from an 18ct gold and natural pearl snake chain.
Guy Burton, Managing Director, Hancocks London, says: “Whoever originally gifted this jewel sought a piece that symbolised adornment but also wanted to wish the wearer good fortune in their life as, when the heart pendant is opened, it discreetly reveals a glazed locket compartment housing a rare four-leaf clover—a timeless emblem of good luck. Engravings mark the years 1875 to 1896, hinting at a significant occasion, possibly a 21st birthday celebration.”
Reflecting on the historical context, Guy Burton added: “Throughout the 19th century, expressions of affection manifested prominently through the symbolism of heart motifs. The Victorian era witnessed a profound fascination with heart-shaped jewellery, undoubtedly influenced by Queen Victoria’s personal affinity towards the shape.
“This piece is in very fine condition and looks incredible when worn. We see quite a few diamond set Victorian heart pendants but this one is particularly impressive given its quality, size and history
