August Jewel of the Month
Hancocks London is delighted to present its Jewel of the Month for August: a Victorian Japanese Shakudo bracelet, dated circa 1880.
The bracelet comprises six circular Shakudo panels, each depicting serene scenes of birds and flowers in gold, silver, and copper. The panels, bezel set in yellow gold, come together with a concealed box and tongue clasp.
Traditional birds, such as cranes, quails, and pheasants, are significant in Japanese culture and auspicious symbols of longevity and prosperity.
The Victorian era saw a deep appreciation for Japanese artistry, especially pieces incorporating Shakudo from the Meiji period. These jewels were celebrated for their exceptional craftsmanship and detailed designs, becoming highly sought after by collectors and connoisseurs.
Amy Burton, Creative Director, Hancocks London, comments: “There is always a strong appreciation for the finest Shakudo jewels: their exemplary craftmanship along with the history it carries always captures the imagination.
“This bracelet is a tiny masterpiece, and it is easy to understand why Japanese art and its rich cultural influence captivated the Victorian era.”
The Victorian Japanese Shakudo bracelet is available to view in Hancocks London’s St James’s townhouse.
