Director’s Notes

These fantastic Art Deco diamond clip brooches were once owned by Margarete Mosheim Gould (1905-1986), an acclaimed actress of the 1930s who graced stages in both Germany and England. Margarete was well-connected in the theatrical world, forming friendships with figures like Marlene Dietrich and Max Reinhardt. Later in life, she moved to London and married American financier Howard Gould. Adding to the story, Margarete’s father, Erwin Brettauer, was a prominent figure in his own right. After founding a bank in Switzerland, he went on to invest in Weimar German cinema and eventually purchased the iconic Chateau Marmont in Hollywood. Under his ownership, he made strides in changing the hotel’s segregation policies, leaving a lasting impact on the industry.
