Director’s Notes

A jeweller’s jeweller, Georges Lenfant was not only a Cartier workmaster but also made jewellery for many of the top Parisian houses of the Place Vendome and rue de la Paix. The list is extensive and impressive and the Lenfant workshop could be described as the unsung heroes of 20th Century French jewellery. When this bracelet was created Jacques Lenfant, Georges son, was leading the workshop and his name is synonymous with the gold chain work that has become instantly recognisable now as Lenfant. He was fascinated by the art of the goldsmith and one of the techniques that has become so distinctively Lenfant is seen here, ‘tissu milanais.’ This incredible workmanship creates a fabric like, woven effect, the gold mesh hammered to create the pattern and design. This bracelet is featured in Jacques Lenfant book ‘Le Livre de la Chaîne’. A bracelet from the ‘Optical’ collection is rare to find and the craftmanship embodies the beauty of Lenfant jewels showcasing exactly why they are so collectible and sought after today.
